Change key in a few seconds

Key Changer is a song key changer and audio pitch changer for Chrome. It moves the key of a song in real time, one semitone at a time, up to a full octave up or down, and the song keeps its speed.

  1. Play something

Open YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify Web, SoundCloud, or another supported site and start playing audio.

  2. Choose the key

Move up or down by one semitone at a time, from −12 to +12. Use fine tuning for adjustments from −50 to +50 cents.

  3. Keep listening

Key Changer processes the audio while it plays. Video is delayed to stay synchronized with the processed sound, and your pitch setting is remembered for each song.

You can also use:

On macOS, use Option instead of Alt.

Shortcuts can be changed at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

  • Alt+Shift+↑— up one semitone
  • Alt+Shift+↓— down one semitone
  • Alt+Shift+0— original pitch

Keep vocals natural

Pitch shifting normally changes more than the musical key. Move a voice up and it can become cartoonish. Move it down and it can become unnaturally heavy.

Keep vocals natural is on by default. It keeps the singer sounding closer to the same person while the music changes key.

Turn it off when you prefer a slightly cleaner direct pitch shift and do not need vocal character to be preserved.

Keep vocals natural

  • OnOn — keeps the singer’s vocal character more stable
  • OffOff — slightly cleaner direct shift, but voices become brighter upward and heavier downward

Hear the difference

Listen to the same excerpt at the same pitch shift and switch between the original and the Key Changer Engine without losing your playback position.

Powered by the Key Changer Engine

Built for natural-sounding pitch changes

Key Changer is powered by the Key Changer Engine, our real-time audio processing engine designed to shift pitch while preserving natural vocal character.

The engine runs locally in the browser with WebAssembly and keeps vocal character stable while shifting the surrounding music normally.

Works with the sites you already use

Key Changer works with audio playing in Chrome, including:

  • YouTube
  • YouTube Music
  • Spotify Web
  • SoundCloud
  • and many other sites
  • Most players work directly

For most standard web players, Key Changer processes audio directly on the page.

  • Some players need one extra click

Players that use DRM, audio from another domain, or Web Audio may need tab capture.

In that case, click “Start on this tab” once. Key Changer captures the audio from the current tab and processes it locally on your device.

  • Video stays synchronized

Pitch processing adds a small delay to the audio. Key Changer delays the video by the corresponding amount so picture and sound stay together.

  • Where it does not work

Chrome does not allow extensions to run on some internal pages.

Key Changer cannot process audio on:

    • chrome:// pages
    • the Chrome Web Store
    • Chrome’s built-in PDF viewer

The popup explains this when the current page cannot be processed.

Your key comes back with the song

Key Changer remembers a non-zero pitch setting for each song and restores it the next time the same song is detected.

For example:

“Restored −2 for this song”

Return the song to its original pitch and the saved pitch entry is removed.

Audio stays on your device

Key Changer processes tab audio in memory on your device. It does not record audio, save audio files, upload audio, use analytics, create accounts, or send data to the developer.

Pitch settings and a small number of extension settings are stored locally in Chrome.

FAQ

How do I change the key of a song?

Play the song in a Chrome tab, open Key Changer and move the pitch up or down by semitones. Each step is one key; ±12 semitones covers a full octave in either direction. Playback speed stays the same.

Does Key Changer change playback speed?

No. Pitch and playback speed are controlled separately. Changing the key does not make the song play faster or slower.

How far can I change the pitch?

You can shift from −12 to +12 semitones in steps of one semitone.

Fine tuning adds an adjustment from −50 to +50 cents.

What does Keep vocals natural do?

It helps the singer keep a similar vocal character when the pitch changes.

Without it, a direct pitch shift can make voices sound more cartoonish when shifted upward and heavier when shifted downward.

Keep vocals natural is enabled by default and can be changed from the popup or settings.

Which websites does Key Changer work with?

It works with YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify Web, SoundCloud, and many other sites that play audio in Chrome.

Different websites use different playback systems, so Key Changer may process the player directly or ask you to click “Start on this tab” to use tab capture.

Why do I sometimes need to click “Start on this tab”?

Some players use DRM, audio hosted on another domain, or Web Audio in a way that cannot be processed directly on the page.

For those players, Key Changer uses Chrome’s tab capture system after you explicitly start it for the current tab.

Will the video go out of sync?

Key Changer compensates for audio processing delay by delaying the video by the corresponding amount.

The goal is to keep picture and processed audio synchronized during playback.

Does Key Changer send my audio or browsing data anywhere?

Audio is processed locally in memory and is not recorded, stored, or sent to the developer.

Key Changer stores pitch information and settings locally in Chrome. It has no analytics, user accounts, or backend server.

See the privacy policy for the exact data stored and permissions used.

Change the key. Keep the voice natural.
